Spend a day on Aswan's West Bank and islands, visiting the cliffside Tombs of the Nobles, the desert Monastery of St Simeon and the gardens of Botanical Island.
Cross the Nile by boat and climb the hill of Qubbet el-Hawa to the Tombs of the Nobles, where the governors of ancient Aswan were buried during the Old and Middle Kingdoms. The tombs record their expeditions deep into Africa, and the view from the top over the river, the islands and the city is one of the best in Aswan.
Continue across the desert, by camel or on foot, to the Monastery of St Simeon, a vast, fortress-like Coptic monastery founded around the 7th century. Explore its church, the monks' cells, the kitchens and the refectory, and see how the community lived here until the 13th century.
Finish on Kitchener's Island, home to the Aswan Botanical Garden, a lush garden of palms and exotic trees from around the world. Stroll the shaded paths, watch the birds and enjoy the views of the river, before the boat takes you back to your hotel.
