Cross to Aswan's West Bank to visit the ruins of the 7th-century Monastery of St Simeon, reached by camel, and the rock tombs of the Nobles high on the cliff at Qubbet el-Hawa.
Take a motorboat across the Nile to the West Bank, then ride a camel up through the desert to the Monastery of St Simeon, one of the largest and best-preserved Coptic monasteries in Egypt, founded around the 7th century. Explore its fortress-like walls, the church with traces of early Christian paintings, the monks' cells, the kitchens and the refectory, and imagine the community that lived here until the 13th century.
Continue to Qubbet el-Hawa, the hill of the Tombs of the Nobles, where the governors of ancient Aswan were buried in rock-cut tombs during the Old and Middle Kingdoms. Inside, see painted scenes and inscriptions recording their expeditions deep into Africa. The view from the top, over the river, the islands and the city, is one of the finest in Aswan, before the boat takes you back.
