Visit two groups of rescued Nubian monuments: the Temple of Isis at Philae, and the Kalabsha temple complex beside the High Dam.
Start with a motorboat ride to Agilkia Island and the Temple of Isis at Philae. Rescued from the rising waters of the Nile and rebuilt here by UNESCO in the 1970s, it is one of the most photographed temples in Egypt. Walk through the colonnaded forecourt and pylons, see the Kiosk of Trajan on the water's edge, and learn why pilgrims came here to worship Isis until the 6th century AD.
Drive to the western end of the High Dam and take a motorboat to New Kalabsha, a peninsula on Lake Nasser where several rescued Nubian monuments now stand together. The Temple of Kalabsha, dedicated to the Nubian god Mandulis, is the largest free-standing temple in Nubia. Nearby are the rock temple of Beit el-Wali, with lively reliefs of Ramesses II's campaigns, and the elegant Kiosk of Qertassi. It is quiet here, so you often have the site almost to yourself.
