Follow the Nile north from Aswan to three Ptolemaic temples: Kom Ombo, Edfu and Esna.
Leave Aswan in the morning and drive about an hour north to Kom Ombo, a double temple on a bend of the Nile. Its twin sanctuaries honour Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus the Elder. See the carved calendar and the relief of medical instruments, and the mummified crocodiles in the museum next door.
Continue north to Edfu, home to the Temple of Horus, the best-preserved temple in Egypt. Walk from its massive pylon through the courtyard and roofed halls to the granite sanctuary, and follow the story of Horus avenging his father Osiris carved along the enclosure walls.
Finish at Esna, where the Temple of Khnum sits below street level in the town centre. Its hypostyle hall has recently been cleaned, revealing ceilings and column capitals painted in brilliant colours that were hidden under soot for centuries. You then drive back to Aswan, arriving in the evening.
