Explore Luxor's East Bank with a private Egyptologist: the vast temple complex of Karnak, built over 2,000 years, and the elegant Luxor Temple in the city centre.
Your Egyptologist collects you from your hotel for a guided visit to Karnak, the largest temple complex ever built, dedicated mainly to the god Amun. Over some 2,000 years, pharaohs from Senusret I to the Ptolemies added pylons, halls, chapels and obelisks here. Walk through the Great Hypostyle Hall, a forest of 134 giant columns covered with carved inscriptions, see the standing obelisk of Hatshepsut, and visit the Sacred Lake and the giant granite scarab, which local tradition says brings good luck if you walk around it.
Continue to Luxor Temple in the city centre, built mainly by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II. See the obelisk at the entrance, whose twin now stands in the Place de la Concorde in Paris, the colossal statues of Ramesses II and the elegant colonnade of papyrus columns. Inside, the Abu el-Haggag Mosque still sits on top of the ancient walls, a reminder that this site has been in use for more than 3,000 years. The restored Avenue of Sphinxes leads from here towards Karnak before you return to your hotel.
