Visit Gebel el-Silsila, the sandstone quarries that supplied many of Egypt's temples and are lined with rock chapels, then continue to the double temple of Kom Ombo.
Drive north from Aswan to Gebel el-Silsila, where the Nile squeezes between high sandstone cliffs at its narrowest point in Egypt. For more than a thousand years, this is where the stone for temples such as Karnak and Luxor was quarried. Explore the vast quarry faces still marked by ancient tools, the rock-cut chapel of Horemheb, and a row of small shrines built by New Kingdom officials along the river bank. Few tourists come here, making it a real off-the-beaten-track experience.
Continue to Kom Ombo, the double temple on a bend of the Nile dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus the Elder. See its twin sanctuaries, the carved calendar and the famous relief of medical instruments, then visit the Crocodile Museum next door with its mummified crocodiles, before the drive back to Aswan.
