Visit the Temple of Khnum at Esna, whose recently cleaned ceilings now show their original bright colours, and walk through the town's old market.
Drive about an hour south of Luxor to the town of Esna, where the Temple of Khnum, the ram-headed creator god, sits several metres below today's street level, uncovered from the town that grew over it. Only the hypostyle hall survives, but it is one of the finest in Egypt: 24 columns with elaborate floral capitals support a ceiling that recent restoration has cleaned of centuries of soot, revealing astronomical scenes in bright blues, reds and yellows. Afterwards, stroll through Esna's old covered market before returning to Luxor.
