Visit three of Aswan's oldest sites in one day: the temple ruins of Elephantine, the carved rocks of Sehel Island and the Tombs of the Nobles above the West Bank.
Start on Elephantine Island, site of the ancient frontier town of Abu, which guarded Egypt's southern border for thousands of years. Walk among the ruins of the temples of Khnum, Satet and Anuket, the gods of the First Cataract, see the Nilometer used to measure the annual flood, and visit the island museum.
Take a boat south to Sehel Island, where more than 250 inscriptions are carved into the granite boulders, left by officials and expeditions travelling into Nubia. Climb to the Famine Stela, with its legend of seven years of famine under King Djoser.
End at Qubbet el-Hawa on the West Bank, where the governors of ancient Aswan were buried in rock-cut tombs decorated with inscriptions describing their journeys into Africa. The panoramic view from the hilltop over the Nile and the islands is a perfect finish before you return to your hotel.
