Explore Elephantine Island, Aswan's ancient frontier town, with its temples and Nilometer, then take a boat to the gardens on Kitchener's Island.
Take a motorboat to Elephantine Island, the site of ancient Abu, Egypt's southern frontier town for thousands of years. Walk among the ruins of the temples of Khnum and Satet, and see the Nilometer, a stairway down to the river used to measure the height of the annual flood and so predict the harvest and set taxes. Finish in the island museum, which displays finds from the excavations, including jewellery, pottery and a mummified sacred ram.
Continue by boat to Kitchener's Island, home to the Aswan Botanical Garden. Stroll among palms, flowering trees and exotic plants brought from Africa and Asia, listen to the birdsong and enjoy the views of the river and the West Bank dunes. It is a peaceful, shady finish to the morning before the boat takes you back to your hotel.
