Visit the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, one of the most complete temples in Egypt, with painted ceilings, hidden crypts and rooftop chapels.
Your Egyptologist meets you at your Luxor hotel for the drive of around one and a half hours north along the Nile to Dendera, near the town of Qena. The road passes sugar cane fields, villages and irrigation canals, and your guide uses the journey to introduce Hathor, goddess of love, music and joy, and the long history of the temple you are about to explore.
The Temple of Hathor is one of the most complete temples in Egypt, built largely under the Ptolemies and Romans. Walk through the hypostyle hall, where columns crowned with Hathor's face hold up a restored ceiling painted with the sky goddess Nut and the signs of the zodiac. Explore the narrow crypts with their crisp reliefs, climb to the roof chapels, and see the Mammisi (birth house), the Coptic basilica, the small Temple of Isis and the sacred lake, before the drive back to Luxor.
