See the best of Aswan in a single day from Luxor: the High Dam, Philae Temple on its island, and a colourful Nubian village, returning to Luxor by train.
Leave Luxor early in the morning in an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive of about three and a half hours south to Aswan, following the Nile past the towns of Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo. Drinks and snacks are provided on the way, and your guide introduces Aswan, Egypt's southern gateway and the heart of Nubian culture.
Start at the Aswan High Dam, completed in 1970, which created Lake Nasser and changed farming along the Nile for ever. Then take a motorboat to Agilkia Island and the Temple of Isis at Philae, one of the most romantic temples in Egypt. It was dismantled and rebuilt here stone by stone in the 1970s to save it from the floodwaters, and your guide explains the myth of Isis and Osiris carved on its walls.
After lunch, visit a Nubian village on the banks of the Nile, with its brightly painted houses, and meet local families to learn about Nubian culture, crafts and language. In the late afternoon, transfer to Aswan station for the train back to Luxor, where you are met and driven to your hotel.
