Leave Aswan at dawn for the temples of Abu Simbel, then stop at the High Dam on the way back for views over Lake Nasser.
Leave Aswan at dawn for the drive of about three hours across the Nubian desert to Abu Simbel, watching the sun rise over the sand. Your Egyptologist guides you through the Great Temple of Ramesses II, with its four colossal seated statues and halls carved with the Battle of Kadesh, and the Temple of Hathor and Queen Nefertari. Both were rescued from Lake Nasser in the 1960s and rebuilt on higher ground.
On the way back to Aswan, stop at the High Dam, the huge rock-fill dam completed in 1970 that created Lake Nasser, the lake you have just seen at Abu Simbel. Take in the views over the lake and the Nile, and hear how the dam changed Egypt, before you are driven back to your hotel or cruise ship in the afternoon.
